Best Camera Settings for Candlelit Birthday Photos

Birthday Cards AI Cinematic Candle Still style example

Candlelight is dim and warm, which trips up a camera's automatic settings in two predictable ways — underexposure and a color cast that's either too orange or corrected away entirely.

Let some warmth through

Auto white balance often tries to neutralize candlelight's orange tone. Locking white balance to a warmer preset, or adjusting it slightly warm after the fact, keeps the cozy glow that makes the photo feel like candlelight in the first place.

Steady the shot

Low light usually means a slower shutter speed, which risks blur. Brace your arms against your body, or rest the phone on a nearby surface, rather than holding freehand at arm's length.

Focus on the face, not the flame

Tap to focus directly on the subject's face — cameras will sometimes lock focus onto the brighter candle flame instead, leaving the actual subject soft.

Is a candlelit photo always going to look a bit grainy?

Some grain or noise is normal and expected in low light — it's part of what makes a candlelit photo read as authentic rather than artificially lit.
